Abstract
This article dissects Doris Salcedo’s contemporary art installation, Atrabiliarios,
a piece that amalgamates violence, death, and mourning to create a funeral ritual
that stirs pain and consciousness in the viewer. The installation incorporates shoes,
once belonging to victims of feminicides in Colombia, into niches covered with pig
skin. This unique arrangement serves as a denunciation of impunity and a mourning
celebration. The analysis zooms in on how the installation uses the metaphor of
negativity to transform the space and the viewer and how the absence of names and
stories fosters an aesthetic experience that is both a social critique and a reflection
on violence and justice, leaving a profound impact on the viewer.
